1980 HUNGARIAN CENSUS OF POPULATION Summary data (1984)

IV. THE CHANGE IN THE POPULATION'S DEMOGRAPHIC AND EDUCATIONAL CHARAC-TERISTICS

proportion of flats larger than 80 square Jneters is 17 percent in the whole country, the respective proportion is 29 percent for the higher educated. The higher educated in health have most large flats. Almost two fifths of them live in flats larger than 80 square meters. The ground space of the flat depends on the sex of the higher educated. The flats of higher educated women are smaller than of the men. In the respect of comfortness the flats of higher educated are far better than the average flat. Almost 90 percent of them live in flats with all comforts, and only 8 percent live in flats without any comfort. The level of comfortness of the flats of the women is lower than of the men. In the respect of comfortness the higher educated in health are at the first place. More than one tenth of the agriculturist men and of the teacher women live in flats without any comfort. Almost every of the 76 thousand higher educated couples have flat in their own use. Only 1.3 percent live as subtenants. But on the contrary only 85 percent of them use their flats exlusively, 13 percent of them split their flats with some other family. If we count it like this, 30 percent of the 20-29 year old higher educated couples have no independent flat. In this field the middle aged are in better position, 90 percent have independent flat. This proportion falls to 80 percent in the case of the old age higher educated, probably because they share their flats with their children who have family. If we examine these data with regard to the number of children, we find that with the increase in the number of children increases the proportion of families living independently. The higher educated couples without children live among the worst conditions. Almost one tenth of them live as subtenant, one third of them live with another family, probably with the family of one of the parents. The 15 thousand higher educated mothers who rear their children alone are in the worst housing situation. About 3 percent of them live in subtenancy, 28 percent of them live with another family. 7 percent of the higher educated mothers under 30 are subtenant, and more than half of them live with another family, probably with parents. 90
