1980 HUNGARIAN CENSUS OF POPULATION Summary data (1984)

IV. THE CHANGE IN THE POPULATION'S DEMOGRAPHIC AND EDUCATIONAL CHARAC-TERISTICS

More than half of the higher educated in manufacture, construction, transportation, communication and trade are employed in the corresponding branch. There is great difference in the branch structure between men and women in some qualification groups. For example, only slightly more than one third of the agriculturist women work in agriculture, but more than one fifth of them work in the fields: culture, pedagogy and science. 60 percent of the higher educated men in pedagogy, science and general education, and 87 percent of the women with the same education work in the culture branch. At the same time 13 percent of the men found job in industry and 14 percent in the administration, contrary to the 4 and 5 percent proportions for women. Almost every active higher educated (404 thousand) work in nonmanual jobs, only 8 thousand pursue some kind of manual activity. This number constitutes only 2 percent of the higher educated. A decade earlier the proportion of manuals was just slightly higher, but their number rose almost one and a half fold in the course of the same period.
