I. Introduction By publishing of the present volume the Central Statistical Office turns back to earlier traditions, whereas the most important results of all the subjects of the census are shown in a summary volume. In accordance to this the "Summary data" volume includes the main national results and most important data-combinations that were published in earlier volumes, however there are some kinds of data that have not yet been published beforehand. The data in this volume are going back to a longer period of time than in the previous publications, thus the volume gives a dynamic account of the population' s demographic and occupational structure, the compositions of the households and families, and of the housing conditions. The trends and their degree are well illustrated by figures that can be found in the volume. Limits on the size of the volume have not made it possible to break the published data by residence. This will be published within a year as a working paper. The Central Statistical Office published the detailed results of the 1980 census in a series of publications. First, the population and housing statistics were published by counties (one county, one volume) . These were followed by volumes on demography, occupation, household, family, and housing, that were covering, the whole country. There were three more volumes on the latter three subjects, including more detailed national data. Further on volumes were published on special subjects as:"Data on active earners who have manual qualification", "Fertility data", "The residence and working place of active earners", "The main data of housing estates", "Data of those who have high level education". Besides there were published three other volumes including the most important data of the towns and villages, these are: "Principle data of towns", "Principle data of villages", and "Population and housing statistics by the size-group of the settlement". The two last volumes of the 1980 census are the present summary volume and another volume "An Outline on Data Collection and Processing". 5
