The characteristics of the population, flats, and the buildings of housing estates THE DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE HOUSING ESTATE POPULATION 1 January 1980 1 million 675 thousand people lived at housing estates. The distribution of this population between towns and villages is considerably different from the total population. The rural way of life does not require housing estates, so the data and the conclusions refer to the urban population. This proportion is almost 30 percent in towns, and 40 percent in county towns. In the villages only one out of 100 people lives at housing estate. The main demographic difference between the housing estate and the not housing estate population is the age composition. In the housing estate population the proportion of children (below 15 year) is much higher and the proportion of the old people is much lower than in the whole population. It is also worth mentioning that the proportion of the 15-24 housing estate population is lower and the proportion of the 25-44 housing estate population is higher than at other places. The proportion of over 44 aged is lower at housing estates. The surplus of women is smaller at housing estates than other places, this comes from the younger age of housing estate population. The difference in the marital status between the housing estate and the other population has the same reason. At the housing estates the proportion of the married is higher and the proportion of single and widowed is lower than other places.
