The number of families is by 5 percent higher than 10 years earlier, but the rise in the number of those who lived in families hardly exceeded 2 percent, which means that the average family size - the number of family members per 100 families - decreased from 301 to 294. The composition of the families changed only a little since the last census. The proportion of families which consist of a couple decreased a bit, and in correspondence to this the proportion of single parent - child/children families increased a bit. In the couple family-type the proportion of families without children increased in relation to the proportion of families with children; the proportion of families without children is more than one third of all families. In the past decade - as mentioned earlier - there was an increase in the number and proportion of those families where one of the parents is missing as a result of divorce, separation or widowing. The number of families remained without mother increased by 19 thousand since 1970. The majority (84 percent) of the single parent - child/children families are mothers living with their child or children. 37 percent of the mothers living together with their children are widowed, 34 percent are divorced, 24 percent are married (but separated) and 5 percent are unmarried. Among them more than two fifths of the widowed are 60 or older, more than one third of the divorced belong to the 30-39 age group.
