Their number grew by 146 thousand (50 percent growth) by 1970 and their proportion remained about the same. Between 1970 and 1980 there was a shift in the age composition of the commuters towards the older age groups, since in the past decade the growth in the number of commuters was stronger among the 30 year old and older than among the young. In 1980 63 thousand (14 percent) more young commuted than in 1970, but in the same time the number of 30 year old and older commuters grew by 178 thousand (by one third). If we look at the development of commuting by age groups we find that with the exception of the 60 year old and older, their number grew everywhere. The growth, both in number and in proportion, was highest in the age group 40-54: the number of commuters in this age grew by 119 thousand in ten years, which means a one-and-a-half-fold growth since 1970.
