control - have been carried over to their original records. Consequently all criteria figuring there had to be considered basic ones. The further checking and correcting of the notions which presented themselves as a surplus as compared with the full-scale survey, has by no means meant an overwhelming task, since each criteria accepted earlier could be compared to a correct basis in each respect. The control procedure and the correction were theoretically the same as with the full-scale material. Of course, the sample of 25 per cent representativity had neither be further scrutinized according to the notions of the family and the households, nor had a recent stock to be compiled. d/ FURTHER PROCESSING OF THE MAGNETIC TAPES CORRECTED The corrected data, before being tabulated, underwent another run, during of which their final form has been shaped. This time the code-numbers as completed with the consideration of the data processing aspects have been put down in the records. Here the dependants have been provided with the employment data of their parents, as well as the code-numbers referring to different aducátional levels have been adjusted for the effects of the changes occurred in the school system; finally, a number of aggregate or collective code-numbers have been drawn up by the machine (as for example the socio-occupational group). The tabulation took then place on the basis of the final form of the tape. (The drafts are to be seen in the II. 7. part of the documentational Annex. ). e/ THE PROGRAMMING OF THE ELECTRONIC DATA PROCESSING The personal data as well as the information content of the registration of the dwellings and buildings have been separately stored on magnetic tapes in a technical unit having a store capacity of maximum 50'000 items. After the correction of the errors, it came to the compilation of files comprising personal data and data referring to dwellings, buildings as well as the combined data of dwellings, by means of new code numbers which lightened the further processing and did not insufficiently overload the coding activity. The shaping of the file referring to families and households, on the basis of the personal file, took place by electronic computer. Data concerning the families have been transferred from the files of "families and households" to those of dwellings and buildings, while the data referring to dwellings have been transferred to the files of families and households. Nearly 150 tables of the series containing the counties' data have been prepared by means of a general tabulating programme. The system had logically three main parts of follows: - coding - table design - tabulation. During the coding activity, the programme generated from parameter cards which could be • simply filled in, code programmes in COBOL language (altogether 11. ). The coding programmes gen74
