1970 HUNGARIAN CENSUS OF POPULATION Information on the data collection and processing (1977)

I. THE COMPREHENSIVE REWIEV OF THE DATA COLLECTION AND PROCESSING - 8. The electronic data processing of the census of 1970

Referring to the possible educational level, the machine examined the connections between the certificates obtained in different types of school and the needful time spent in learning. The examination performed on the combination of a rather large number of criteria and the corrections furnished an acceptable security. A further criterion to be corrected here was the number of the children born, to which the distribution by family status and age had to be considered, on the basis of the vital statistics available. As far as the survey of the educational level was concerned, the majority of the corrections was necessitated by the equalizing, according to up-to-date categories of the educational levels obtained in different types of school. The final correction of the occupational criteria The starting point of the segment is the economic activity which is a basis criterion corrected within the framework of the former programme. A connection had to be ensured between the code-numbers of the individual occupation, the occupation quality, the occupational branch, sector as well as the place and the time worked out in the agriculture, when taking these criteria by pairs and considering their multiple combinations. Among the combinations as the most complex are regarded the connections between the individual occupation, occupational status, occupational branches and sectors. There was no possibility to set forth the more ten-thousand imaginable combinations, all the more since the capacity of the computer would have been insufficient for a tabulation of this size. Instead of this, several criteria have been separately tabulated and logical variables have been attached to them. By means of the operations performed with the variables, the corrections have been successfully carried out in a rather simple manner which, in addition, saved space. The control and the correction of the notions have required a certain priority. (The sequence of the notions). It was indispensable since the previously controlled and accepted notion has been regarded as identical with the basis criteria. Thus the scope of the basis criteria continually became enlarged while more and more information was available for the control of a subsequent notion. During the compilation, special attention was paid to the examination of the question whether the control procedure of the notion has to be concluded if there was no possibility for its repeated consideration. Special attention had to be paid less one or other criteria left out from the control procedure, since the criteria in question may be used as basis for the next correction and may change the meaning of the information obtained earlier - a circumstance which may result in contradictions eventually. The control and correction of the data of dwellings and buildings With the data concerning the dwellings and buildings, the questions were less sophisticated than in the case of the personal data. The coding was also more reliable which resulted in a restricted number of the errors. 72
