1970 HUNGARIAN CENSUS OF POPULATION Information on the data collection and processing (1977)

I. THE COMPREHENSIVE REWIEV OF THE DATA COLLECTION AND PROCESSING - 8. The electronic data processing of the census of 1970

b/ The family status of the 4 persons living in the 2 n <^ flat is as follows: head of the household, spouse, child, spouse of the child. In this flat the household consists of two families. The first, according to the family status consists of a head of the family and a spouse, the second one consists of a head of the family and a spouse again. Consequently, 3 records (2 families and 1 household) are made of the persons living in the flat no. 002. As far as the whole census programme is concerned, it is influenced by the new techniques of the data preparation and tabulation. The transit time, the time required for several work-phases have changed, as well as the manual data processing and the publishing of the volumes have to be organized differently. The publication of the detailed final results can be launched only after a lengthy preparatory work which may be followed by quick successive publishing of volumes. It has been partly to be attributed to the fact that the tables destined for publication could be directly printed by means of the computer and the electric typewriter to mirror plates. Consequently, the operations connected with the editing, type-setting and correction could be entirely be left out or could be performed by the machine itself. b/RECORDING OF THE DATA (PUNCHING, CONTROL OF THE PUNCHING AND TESTING FOR COMPLETENESS) Preparations for the recording of the primary data were made by the establishment at Szolnok of the SZÜV (Enterprise for the Computing Techniques and Data Processing) functioning under the supervision of the Central Statistical Office. During the work-time of two shifts, 30 punchers and 20 controllers prepared daily 35-40 thousands of cards in a shift. For the punching and controlling machines of CAM type made in the Soviet Union were used. The punching lasted from July 1970 till May 1972. At the same place, a testing for completeness was performed by sorters, in order to be convinced whether the census district disposes of as many punched cards as the number of persons or dwellings belonging to it. The checking of a number of more important criteria, as for instance the checking of the codes of the absurd connections of the basis criteria was also performed there. These latter served as the starting point of the automatic correction of errors. At the same time, it was the last opportunity offered to the correction in order that the necessary information content needful to the establishing of the right code number be ensured, by means of the direct reading oi xne questionary recording the survey results. c/ THE PROGRAMMING AND PERFORMING OF THE AUTOMATIC CORRECTION OF ERRORS IN THE PRACTICE The organizational structure of the correction of errors The census of 1970 had not a computer of its own at disposal, the machine stock was kept in operation by the Directorate of Computer Techniques of the Central Statistical Office. The types of machines employed are surveyed in the designs no. 3. and 4. annexed. In all phases of the processing activity, mainly in the solution of the highly sophisticated technical and programming problems of the automatic correction of errors, a close cooperation and s the opportunity for the mutual consultations had to be ensured, concerning each detail. 5.
