PREFACE TO THE FOREIGN-LANGUAGE PUBLICATION An information material has been published in Hungarian on the data collection and processing and on the methodological questions of the Hungarian population census in 1970 after the data publication had been finished. It seemed to be expedient to publish this information material also in English and Russian languages in order to make the methods applied in Hungary accessible also to foreign inquirers. The information material has been shortened to a certain level, as several details of the Hungarian publication are of interest but from national point of view. Abridgement refers rather more to the annexes than to the text. Information on the less important parts i.e. the auxiliary printed forms, on processing auxiliaries, coding instructions as well as on the draft-tapes of data processing has been omitted, accordingly. This form of publication may offer useful service to those who while using statistics on Hungary intend to get insight into the production methods, too. We do hope that this publication will be serviceable also for those being active in the preparation and methodological elaboration of the population censuses around 1980. This publication is the translation of the 31 from the serie of the Hungarian 197 0 Census of Population. 3
