I. THE COMPREHENSIVE REWIEV OF THE DATA COLLECTION AND PROCESSING - 1. The prepatory activities of the census

logical rules concerning the population census and the registration of the dwelling fund in the CMEA member states. " It comprised the time and programme, the scale and scope of the censuses as well as it considered certain notions and classifications. The main topics are: - Permanent and present population - Urban and rural population - Family status - Cultural level - Resources of the costs of living - Work-place (branch or sector of the national economy) - Social groups - Occupations - Family household Similarly, the recommendations referred to the programme and the topics of the registration of the dwelling fund, the definitions of the dwelling and the living room, as well as to certain classifi­cations used. In order to elaborate the details of several topics, a plan of work has been accepted for the period 1965-1966. As the final result of the activities performed in 1965, and according to the amendments proposed by the delegations, a second enlarged volume of the work entitled "Methodological rules" as cited above has been published on behalf of the 7 t h session of the Statistical Standing Committee held in January 1966. The duties have been divided between the several delegations. The experts of the People's Republic of Hungary have undertaken to work out a study on the application of the sample survey techniques, th The working out of the census problems has been finished at the 8 session of the Statistical Standing Committee of the CMEA, held in Moscow 1966. The methodological theses published earlier th th on the 5 and 7 sessions have been included to the final document, as completed by the modifications resulting from the respecting decisions of the Statistical Standing Committee. The Statistical Section of the Secretariat has puslished "the collected methodological theses expounded on the 7** 1 and 8** 1 sessions in a separate paper for each CMEA member states. In addition to the chapters mentioned (time, programme, notions), this paper dealt with the uniform recommendations of the occupational categories, the "minimal programme" of the data processing and the register of dwellings including the draft tables. Similarly, after lenghty preparatory work, the final recommendations were presented to the Conference of the European Statisticians organized within the framework of the UN Statistical Com­mission and the European Economic Commission. In 1959 the Conference has accepted a series of recommendations as to the population cen­suses which were to be held in the countries belonging to the EEC in the sixties. The fulfilment of the European programme was then analysed on the basis of the communication given by the respective countries in 1963, the results of which have finally been published in a volume entitled "European population censuses. Series 1960." 9
