Derdák Éva: Trónoló Madonna a gyermek Jézussal és Püspökszent : a budapesti Belvárosi Nagyboldogasszony templom szentélyében 2010-ben újonnan felfedezett két gótikus falkép feltárása és helyreállítása

Műtárgyvédelem 36 were proof of this. One of these was excavated long ago, while the second was uncovered during the present restoration, but after the restoration of the Madonna picture already. Both were at one time supplied with a door which could be closed. Following our conservation excavation, which in addition to wall breaking meant the mechanical removal of the lime layers, a pictorial depiction came to light. In this way, in the pointed upper field of the tall niche a Madonna sitting on a throne became visible, with the child Jesus standing on her lap. The niche showed signs of the carving back of the stonework, from which we inferred the existence of a baldachin-like decorative structure at one time. Lower down, on the left-hand side of the niche recess, we uncovered an additional image depicting a bishop-saint, identified as such on the basis of his attire. With regard to technique, this figurái picture differed from the first one: the Madonna picture was a fresco made on plaster while the bishop-saint depiction was simply painted on a lime ground on the plaster of a wall joint. The church was built in many different phases. The chancel niche was, however, fashioned at the time of the first Gothic building operations, because pieces of carved stone tracery from these were used in its masonry. On the basis of signs of bricks, the partial filling in of the niche can be linked to the Historicist renovation work performed in the church in the late 19th century. During the wall-painting operations which followed this, no attempt was made to restore the original condition of the niche based on full and extensive research, although some old remains had come to light. Today already we have more possibilities than our predecessors did. During the present restoration, we attempted, by performing co-ordinated comparative investigations, which we recorded in documentation, to see matters more clearly. Our main task, beyond excavation and rescue work, was to show for the present age, accurately and enjoyably, surviving details of the one-time altar testifying to high-level artistic work. However, many new questions have appeared in connection with earlier analyses and presentations. We hope that we shall be able to continue with our investigations, with the aim of uncovering and showing fine features from the heyday of the church that are still hidden.
