The mihrab niche on the south wall of the church is a reminder of the Turkish occupation period, which brought to an end the medieval phase in the architectural history of the building. The evolution of the chancel architecturally suggests that the church acquired a valuable relic in the 14th century, and by so doing thus became a pilgrimage church.
