Darabos Edit: Carlo Bugatti-bútorok pergamenborításának restaurálása
Darabos Edit • Carlo Bugatti bútorok pergamenborításának restaurálása The console table’s parchment writing-surface inset - affixed by means of tacks and glue - had become misshapen and was torn in many places. As a result of water damage to the artefact, the parchment had shrunk from side to side and had expanded from top to bottom. The cleaning of the parchment inset was performed first with rubber erasers and then with a solution of isopropyl alcohol in water (three parts isopropyl alcohol to one part water). The stains caused by iron and copper corrosion were treated using a 3% solution of triammonium citrate, in gel form. Corrections to the shape were made possible by the humidifying of the inset in a number of parts. As a first step, it was hydrated for 48 hours at a level of 70% RH. Additional softening was effected with the help of a ‘sandwich’ made from Sympatex® air-permeable membrane and blotting paper. During the softening process, the parchment inset was smoothed out section by section through the placing on it of small pieces of board with modest weights on top of them. In this way, distortion could be reduced in these sections. After this, the parchment inset was put on a stretching frame. The flat but still slightly rumpled parchment was then placed in a press. Initially, lighter pressure was applied to it, and then greater pressure. Supplementary parts and repair strips were made from goatskin parchment; these were stuck in place using an adhesive made from a mixture of rice starch and rabbit-skin glue. The retouching of the areas made good was executed using metal-complex dyes. The cleaning of the parchment back-panels on the corner-chairs was similarly performed using a solution of isopropyl alcohol in water (three parts isopropyl alcohol to one part water). For the making good of splits (which were minor), we used dyed goatskin parchment. The torn silk braid holding the chair backs was strengthened and conserved by means of sewing. Reconstruction of the missing parchment seat-panels of the corner-chairs was performed on the basis of analogies. In order to protect the new panels supplied, the parchment was attached not to the chair frame, but to a piece of wooden board. Under the seat-panel was placed a thin, non-woven layer. The parchment was humidified before being tacked on. The shaping of the corner parts was achieved by moistening the corners of the parchment and stretching them. The seat-panels were put onto these pieces of furniture but were not made fast; later, they were given the relief metal-strip additions characteristic of Bugatti chairs.
