Tóth Edina: Kínai alakos üveg restaurálása
Tóth Edina • Kínai alakos üveg restaurálása The Restoration of a ‘Chinaman Bottle’ Edina Tóth The restored bottle, in the form of a Chinese man, was made at the Répáshuta Glassworks, which was built in 1790 by the glass manufacturer János Stuller. The most characteristic products of this facility in the Bükk Hills of Hungary were glass bottles of this type. They were normally used as liqueur bottles. The artefact arrived from the collection in 11 pieces. Its surfaces were covered in soiling caused by the atmosphere and human contact, and the painting on them was very much worn. Substantial parts of both arms were missing. The goal of the restoration was - after the cleaning of the highly soiled fragments — the complete assembly of the pieces and the making of the missing parts, thereby achieving an appropriate aesthetic image of the bottle. Soiling could be removed from the surfaces of the bottle using foam made from a solution of surface-active substance in water; afterwards, the surfaces were rinsed in a solution of distilled water and alcohol. The provisional sticking together of the fragments was performed with sticking tape and hot-melt adhesive; the sticking itself was executed using water-based, high viscosity epoxy resin. Regarding the replacement of the missing parts, because of the narrow mouth of the bottle it was not possible to make a negative from the inside in a way that was appropriate. Sticking therefore took place only partly, and for the underpinning of the additions from the inside the upper part of the bottle had to be taken off on a number of occasions. The replacement parts were made using Araldite 2020; after hardening, they were worked using various dental polishing tools. In the last stage, the fitting of the supplementary parts took place followed by the full assembly of the artefact, the painting on which was touched up using transparent water-based emulsion paint.
