Sárvári Katalin: Tanagra jellegű festett terrakotta szobor restaurálása

Sárvári Katalin • Tanagra jellegű festett terrakotta szobor restaurálása Conservation of a painted tanagra-style statuette Katalin Sárvári The 19th century tanagra-style statuette had been collected by Déri Frigyes, who donated most of his collection to the museum of Debrecen. The statuette’s style with this unique look had been interesting for the museologists, because during the historicism era lots of fake Greek tanagras were made Europe-wide. Their fame was due on the lifelikeness and the meticulous level of detail. They were copied since antiquity, and the 19th century’s excavations rekindled interest for the statuettes. As the demand was larger than the number of real statuettes, lots of forgeries were made to cater for the market. These issues prompted performing a termoluminescence test before the actual work could be begun. The reconstruction could be started after the survey result were known. The reconstruction had to be done in a reversible way. This statuette could be a sample conservation, providing lots of alternative ideas for similar types of objects, or problems. During the conservation, it was a great challenge to clean the statuette, as separating the contamination and tarnishes proved to be difficult. Therefore, the work could only be done under microscope - and even then, only slowly, due to the painted surfaces. The cleaning had been followed by the conservation. After the reattachable fragments were ready, the missing parts were cast, glued, and painted as well. The replacement of the underside restored the stability of the statuette, thus it became once again exhibitable. When I chose the statuette, it was very important for me that I could use new materials and methods during the conservation. It was a big challenge for me to explore the backstory of the statuette, also the tanagras. It was especially difficult, as there is scant relevant Hungarian literature. So I hope that this article can be an useful guide in the future.
