1773-ban itt éri a jezsuita rend feloszlatása. Ekkor 69 éves. További élete sajnos az évszázadok homályába vész. A szobor restaurálása a 2007/2008-as tanévben a Magyar Képzőművészeti Egyetem Restaurátor Tanszékén történt, IV. évfolyamos munkaként. Life of a Jesuit wood carver and the history and conservation of his forgotten statue (Berndt Baumgartner: Apostle figure, 1735-1737) Dávid Rátonyi Very little is known about Bernát F. Baumgartner SJ (August 14,1704 - after 1773) although he was one of the most renown masters of Jesuit sculpture and wood carving. He entered the Jesuit order in 1703, where he initially worked as a sculptor for the local joinery. In 1735 he was commissioned to prepare the furnishing of the Saint Ignatius of Loyola church in Esztergom. It is remarkable that despite contemporary practice, he himself designed the altars beside carving them. It was discovered in the academic year of 2008 that the master worked not only for the Jesuits while staying in Esztergom. The proof is a painted linden statue of an unknown male saint or an apostle, which got into the wood sculpture workshop of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. When it arrived, the statue was very dusty, significant areas had pealed off and the traces of a former unauthentic intervention could be observed. Larger missing areas were found especially on the exterior of the gilded cloak and on the silver- coated tunica. The interior of the cloak was repainted in blue, the pedestal in greyish white. The lustre of the tunica was nearly completely washed off with the rest of the layers during the former intervention. The repainting was left only on the butt of the right lower arm where the lustre was also preserved. There were no large cracks and fissures in the statue, only the right hand was missing. An inscription „Vendelin” and a letter “C” were found on the back of the statue, which links it with the Saint George altar of the Franciscan Saint Anna church of Esztergom: they refer to Saint Wenceslaus in the repainted picture of the pediment. A computer reconstruction was made with regard to the measurements, which demonstrated that the left arm of the saint had pointed at the cartouche of the altar. Thus it seems probable that beside preparing the furnishing of the Jesuit church, Baumgartner also worked for the Franciscan church. . 32
