Séd Gábor - Osgyáni Vilmos - Várbíró Erzsébet: Zsolnay Vilmos emlékművének restaurálása (fém, kőépítmény, kerámia)
Műtárgyvédelem 34 appearance and uniform general effect of the statues was reached with the polishing of the protective layers. The hard limestone block base had a brick core, similarly to the ceramic construction that held the bronze statues. Apart from conservation, a serious problem was caused by the permanent wetting from below. Having stopped it, the desiccation of the wet brick core was accelerated with the installation of an electro-osmotic system. A significant part of the stone material was injured, fissured, dirty and decaying. The fissured elements were replaced but the superficial injuries of the intact carvings were not repaired. All the smaller and not disturbing older injuries were preserved since they illustrate the past hundred years of the memorial. A serious intervention had to be made on the pillars under the seated bronze statues so that the brick core under ceramic coating should not move and the stone replacements could fully preserve the block-like impression. The substructure was consolidated, the surfaces were cleaned and all the possible places where water could infiltrate were sealed. The speciality of the statue group was the application of a plutonite ceramic coating, which is wholly unique: it was experimented and produced in the Zsolnay factory of Pécs. After the cleaning of the ceramic surface, the loosened elements were dismantled and conserved. The aim was, from the very beginning, to keep all the original elements or element parts as far as it was possible even if they were injured. These latter ones were conserved and completed. The dismantled and conserved elements and the copies made after the original ones were built back on the statue by the original technology. The completions, similarly to the original elements, were produced in the Zsolnay factory in Pécs. After conservation, the plutonite coating of the pedestal of the statue group designed by Frigyes Schulek has a uniform appearance mirroring the true image of the original imposing effect.
