RESTORING A PAIR OF 18TH CENTURY LEATHER GAITERS

Abstract: No written record or iconographic evidence is available concerning the manufacturing or wearing of 17-18th century leather gaiters with knee folds and, until now, our museums have not owned such objects either. The pair of gaiters under discussion here were found in pieces in the ossarium of the crypt built under the Church of the Dominican Order in Vác. They were torn, incomplete and in general, in very poor condition. Cleaning and preservation was carried out by Mária Újváry, the restorer who took part in the rescue excavations. Following recovery, the gaiters were cleaned in soft water and then conserved in a water-based glycerol solution. After that the material was treated using a fat liquor solution. Final drying and reshaping was carried out slowly, between sheets pf blotting paper, at room temperature. As a result of this procedure, the leather became softer and more flexible.

The work of Márta KisS-Bendefy encompassed historical research related to this piece of attire, as well as the completion of missing pieces, the strenghtening of weakened parts, and the final compilation of the artifact. It was important to find analogous objects before restoration could be started, since reliable work could be carried out only on the basis of original forms and manufacturing techniques.
