Lencz Balázs: Egy XIX. századi japán sisak restaurálása
restore the original black colour. In the end the method of mobile anode galvanization was chosen which successfully reproduced this colour. Conservation was accomplished by applying a silicone-fat and WD-40 surface protection cover. The original shape of the deformed neck armour was also restored. Corrosion products covering the area of damaged varnishing were removed mechanically and the thus exposed surfaces were preserved. Loose layers of varnishing were ironed onto the surface following the injection of tannic acid solution of poly(buthyl-methacrylate). Discontinuities of varnishing were filled wth copal varnishing mixed with pulverized dolomite. In accordance with the original technique, varnishing was applied in several layers on the surface. Once these layers had dried, the surface was polished and black Indian ink was rubbed into it. Finally, a colorless copal layer was spread over the entire surface. With the exception of the strings that held the neck plates together, textile components were cleaned and conserved by Mrs. Katalin Zámbori Fikó, a textile restorer in the Hungarian National Museum.
