THE HISTORY OF WINGED-AI TAR RESTORATION IN HUNGARY UNTIL THE FIRST WORLD WAR

Abstract: The study gives a historical review of the various methods employed in winged altar restoration from the Middle Ages to the end of World War I. At the same time it commemorates the 7th General Assembly of the Sociely of Hungarian Physicians snd Naturalists on August 9-17th, 1846 in Kassa (Kosice) when the Assembly appealed for the conservation of monuments as part of an initiative by Imre Hcnszlman.

The originality of a piece of art was ignored in the Middle Ages and even in the 17th and 18th centuries. The winged altars, as liturgical prerequisites, were repaired on-the-spot without disassembling them. The romanticism of the 19th century attributed national value to pieces of art recalling the glory of past times. This gave an impetus to the collection of old Hungarian artistic monuments and, in accordance to the monument conservation theories of the period, to the restoration of the winged altars. At the beginning of the 20th century, the central problem of the conservation and restoration of wooden pieces of art was the rescue of medieval winged altars and wooden statues.
