CONSERVATION POSSIBILITIES FOR PARCHMENT DECAYED IN WATER Abstracts: The author presents the possibilities for conserving and unfolding partially decayed parchment through the example of a specimen that was stored in a brass cylinder which had been buried in soil. Following the placement of this find into a solution of potassium-lactate and butyric acid, the jelly-like state of the parchment could be improved. Subsequent treatment with tertiary- buthyl alcohol resulted in additional loss of water. Copper salts that had saturated the objects were first cleansed using a complex-forming agent. However, the parchment started swelling excessively even under the influence of most careful humidifying, therefore this procedure had to be abandoned. The parchment was opened and laid flat in a humid chamber at a relative humidity of 80%. It was subsequently pressed in several stages to re-shape its three dimensional form. From a purely aesthetical point of view its missing parts have not been completed. During the course of storage a state had to be maintained that would make exhibiting this object possible. In the passe partout prepared for this purpose, the parchment is mounted onto the back board using transparent stripes with an UV-filtering quality. The object is protected by an UV-filter foil placed in front of it.
