SEQUESTRING AGENTS IN THE CLEANING OF PAINTED OBJECTS

Abstracts: Application of sequestring agents in the cleaning of painted objects is a widely spread cleaning method. According to experiences, these compounds, which are suitable for binding two and three valency metal ions in the first line, have excellent cleaning effects. Some conservators doubt that sequestring agents can remove fatty dirt. Some others explain their succes in this relation with the saponification effect of the alkaline media provided by some sequestring agents on fats. The author of the article provides a hypothesis relating to the role of sequestring agents in the removal of fatty dirt combined with metal ions. She also tries to give answers to the questions of conservators, whether sequestring agents can cause harm to the pigments and the binding media of the painted surfaces.
