THE RECONSTRUCTION OF AN AVAR DRINKING-HORN Abstracts: In 1934, on the site of Kiskőrös-Vágóhíd Avar cemetery, 23 fragments of a canelured bodied, free-blown glass object were exposed from a grave. From the fragments the elliptic mouth-rim of the object could be constructed. Gyula László, archeologist, prepared its reconstruction-drawing in 1955. The restoration started in 1990. The remaining rim-fragments fitted on the form made of plasticine, but the side-fragments couldn’t fit in. Taking analogies into consideration - altering the construction drawing, the modelled horn-shape core was the correct form to fit the fragments completely. The glass-fragments’ wall-thickness was very thin. We glued the original fragments to the walls of the glass blown into the negative form made by the plasticine core. This reconstruction process needs the cooperation of a couple of experts, but its reversibility is advantageous: it protects and keeps the fragments together and gives the impression of completeness to the viewer.
