Régészeti jellegű tárgyak restaurálásáról - Vámosi Lajosné: Egy avar kori favödör restaurálása

VÁMOSI, Lajosné The restoration of a kit from the Avar period - Summary The kit (wooden pail) with bronze hoops restored was found at Zamárdi-rétiföldek, in an Avar cemetery, in course of the 1984 excavations. The cleaning of the wood was performed by using 5-10% phosphoric acid, with a special view on its cleaning and conserving effects. For the conservation, a matter of natural origin, the so-called propolis was used. Propolis is a pitch-like material collected by the bees. It contains 50-60 percent of resin and balms, 30% wax, 8-10% of volatile oil as well as numerous components of known and unknown composition with special trace elements. Its composition is depending on the place and date of its collection. The bees utilize it as a con- servational, desinfecting and building material for the hive. According to biological and pharmacological investigations, it is of destructive effect in respect of the bacteria and microbes. It is soluble in alcohol, but for a better leaching, the solvent should be prepared beforehand. For the completion, synthetic resin Araldit SV 427 was used. The treatment and conservation of the metal constituents was done by traditional methods (using Na-hexametaphosphate, Seignette-salt and phosphoric acid, as well as Paraloid B 72.).
