Történeti, ipartörténeti emlékek restaurálásáról - Csere Judit: A győri mészáros céh ládájának restaurálása

Former repairs can be traced by completions made from a substance resemblings sealing wax. The lock was mended several times, the supporting plate around the slot turned out to be a later addition. The whole surface including the mountings was thickly lacquered. Before cleaning the author removed the weakly attached moving parts and the iron fittings. The thick shellac coating was removed first by denaturated alcohol then by dimethyl- formamide with the latter providing better results. During cleaning it turned out that part of the decorations was painted. On the chest there were signs of insect pest infestation and therefore disinfection was carried out by a 2% solution of penta- chlorophenol in denaturated alcohol. Minor gaps in the timber were filled by Araldit SV 427 epoxy resin, the replacements of the decorative elements were carved from walnut stained by walnut stain to match the colour of the chest. A split on the right of the object due to warping was joined alter the wetting of the inside and stucky by glue. The original paint fragments were fixed by a 2% solution of Paraloid B 72 in acetone, minor losses were retouched by tempera. Since shellac was not used at the time the chest was made, the author prepared a paste (4 parts of beeswax, 2 parts of turpentine and 1 part of colophony) which was rubbed thinly into the surface after cooling and polished afterwards. The hinges were treated by a solution of Selecton b2 at pH 7. Blue annealing was attacked by even the mildest chemical applied to remove rust, so the mountings were repolished, degreased and heated in an adjustable oven to temper tint (295-300 °C) and given a fresh blue annealing. The pattern was then covered and the blue annealing removed from where it was undesired. After neutralizing and drying them the metal fittings were provided with a protective coating with 2% metacrylate solution. The reverse sides of the mountings were treated by Noverox rust preventer following which the fittings and the locks were reassembled. 217
