RESTORATION AND STRUCTURAL FASTENING OF THE ANNUNCIATION ALTAR PREDELLA OF KISSZEBEN

Summary

The authors account of the restoration and structural fastening of the Annunciation altar predella of Kisszeben. The winged altar was made at the beginning of the loth century and is now exhibited in the Ancient Art Collection of the Hungarian National Gallery. The structure of the predella is outlined, the proceeding modifications, repaintings and the imperfections of certain components with a photo documentation. They bring into prominence the solution of the back part completion among the other conserving and restoring works of the disassamhled predella. After its disassembling the back part consisted of two fractions and the original board between them was incomplete, having a gap of approximately 15 cm. width. This great inadequacy was the consequence of the earlier inefficient repairing, when fir planks were sunk and fastened into the buck part. These have been removed and replaced by lime laths . The authors built up from the same laths that very panel with which the gap was filled in. The smaller, lower fraction has been transposited to the panel. In the: course of assembling the restored parts a supporter was built into the console of the right and left side of the niche, thus the predella sustains safely the whole altar.

Zusammenfassung

Die Autoren befassen sich mit der Restaurierung und mit der Konstruktionsver- stä'rkung des Predellas vom Englischen Gruss-Altar in Kisszeben. Dieser vom Anfang des 10. Jahrhunderts entstammender Flügelaltar ist in der Alten Kunst Sammlung der Ungarischen Nationalgalerie zu finden.

Im ersten Teil des Artikels erörtern sie den Aulbau des Predellas, die späteren Abänderungen, Übermalungen und die Fehler der einzelnen Bestandteile, über welche sie auch genaue Vermessung und Photodokumentalion gefertigt hatten. Der Verlauf der Restaurierungsarbeiten wurde auf Grund dieser Faktoren bestimmt.

Von den Konservierung« und Reslaurierungsarbeiten des aid Bestandteile zerlegten Predellas haben sie die Verwirklichung der Ersetzung der Rückseite besonders hervorgehebt. Die Rückseite bestand nach der Zerlegung aus zwei Teilen und zwischen den beiden Bruchstücken fehlte das ursprüngliche Brett in der Breite von
