The same care for economy in functioning and maintenance should be applied to the selection of technical equipment for the building, especially in view of the difficulty experienced in many countries in ensuring proper maintenance and repair of highly sophisticated equipment. 7. Proper provision should be made, not only for the immediate needs of the archive, but also for its inevitable expansion in the future. This should be taken into account in the choice of the site and in the design of the building. 8. Before any final decision is made, the archivist should draw up a detailed brief of his needs, including relevant statistical data about the bulk and annual increase of the documents, the number of users, staff etc. No building should be constructed or adapted as an archive repository without such a brief and without careful consultation with the archivist. 9.
