trend, then the whole pattern of archive buildings might change. It would be possible for the public service function of archives (the provision of reading rooms and research facilities) to be located in the centre of cities close to other institutions while the storage and cataloguing accommodation could be located outside the urban areas on sites which were cheaper to buy and provided a better environment for the preservation of original records. The possible implications of this sort of development is something I leave for others to consider.
