picture. About 35 per cent belonged to mining, handicraft and industry, 8 per cent to commerce and transport, 11 per cent to public services and free occupa­tions. The proportion of the agricultural population was 20 or (inclusive of a cer­tain part of the journeymen and of the house-owners) about 30 per cent. All these averages and ratios varied rather widely in the various occupations and even in various parts of the town. With this structure of population, the town of Sop­ron could be considered already in 1848 as one of the relatively urbanised agglo­merations of Hungary.
