The Making of Hungary’s First General Map in the first Decade of the 19th Century. The Cartographic Enterprise of János Lipszky Introduction (Chapter 2) The present essay describes János Lipszky military officer’s family, career, cartographic activities and their precedents as well as the impact of his work on later maps. Every effort has been made to ensure that this presentation is based on the thorough research of literature as well as relevant archival sources. The roots of this volume stem from the author’s doctoral thesis, presented in 1998, which had been preceded by research carried out in 1990—1997. This monograph also contains data from a few recendy published smaller studies as well as the 1998 Lipszky commemorative conference. I placed significant emphasis on identifying and researching all archival sources related to the specific topic. Lipszky, who designed maps in Pest as a military officer of the Habsburg Empire and received substantial assistance from state authorities, retired after his service years to his family estate in present-day Slovakia, taking his notes and map collection with him. Consequently, possible sources were to be researched in three countries: Hungarian archives contained the majority of documents and map collections of political state institutions (Hungarian Chancellery, Council of Governor-general, Transylvanian Gubernium) and counties, while military archives in Vienna (Kriegsarchiv) housed documents and personnel files of military authorities and Slovakian archives stored family documents and personal legacies. Aspects that I have used in processing materials are in conformity with those used by JOHANNES DÖRFLINGER, professor of history at the university in Vienna, in his two-volume work; therefore the present introduction will also contained a detailed description of those aspects. The history of any map will only be fully told if there is information about the cartographer’s personality, education, activities, and the professionalism of the coppersmith, and the work of the publisher, conditions of duplication and distribution, the scope of use of the map and the presentation of its use. Within the limits imposed by the sources, the monograph shall elaborate all issues. Uterature Contemporary newspapers have already paid significant attention to the makings of the Lipszky-map. The journals of FERENC ZACH (first the Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden, then the Monatliche Correspondent tur Befirerung der Erd- und Himmels- Kunde) and LAJOS ScheDIUS (Zeitschirft von und fúr Ungern) carried detailed reports 431
