Matthias Belius: Comitatus Arvensis

INTRODUCTION 51 February 1719 Buchholtz wrote that Bél must have received his description that he had prepared about Árva County with the help of his friend Ádám Kheberitsch.3 The description didn’t remain, consequently it is impossible to know to what extent Bél used it. However it must have been prepared according to Bél’s „questionnaire” since Buchholtz wrote in the same letter that he was also working on the description of „his county” (Liptó) „in agreement with the prescribed rubrics” (juxta rubricas praescriptas).4 To be further noted that according to a comment in the diary of Buchholtz in 1718, he was not the only one to collect information for the description of Árva, since Illés Petrovicz, headmaster of the school in Lestina, had also sent materials.5 6: Before 1719 (cf. above). It is proved by a letter sent to the Locotenential Council dating of 9th July 1732 where he writes that he could not gather suffi3 „Qualem descriptionem Comitatus Arvensis administra opera Perillustris Domini Kheberitsch (a quo faceta de pastinacae virtutibus adjecta) concinnaverim, scio missam a Domino Doctore Mollero accepit Claritas Tua...” Cf Buchholtz's above mentioned letter to Mátyás Bél. In: Bél 1993. nr. 49. About the same letter see also Tibensky 1987. 219. 4 See Bél 1993. nr. 49. 5 Bogár 2009. 107. 6 Bél mainly writes about the Thurzos and their descendents (D pp. 31-35, E pp. 31-35.): the coinciding data are scarce. 7 The text includes a citation from an unknown work that states the Castle of Árva was built by the Templars (p. i.). Bél also writes about that when presenting the Castle of Árva but is incredulous about the veracity of the statement. See D pp. 41-42, E p. 42.
