Dr. Péter Balázs: Guide to the archives of Hungary (Budapest, 1976)

Csongrád Megyei Levéltár (Csongrád County Archives)

The archival material of corporations is defective, containing mainly records of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Guild papers embrace rarely the eighteenth century. Defective records remained from the trade associations and the specialized and economic associations. The archival material of economic organs totals 624 running metres. Among them the records of the Pick Salami Fabric of Szeged start with 1893 and those of the Hemp Processing Factory of Szeged with 1894. Of the agricultural enterprises the most significant is the archival material of the Makó estate of the Csanád Roman Catholic Bishopric, beginning with 1732. The records of the 1919 Council's Republic total only 2 running metres, mainly papers of directorates. The records of the commissions of popular power and formed for special purposes (1945-1949) have a great historical value, the more so, as they come from counties first liberated in the country. Inventories published on the archival material: A Szegedi Állami Levéltár fondjainak jegyzéke (List of Archival Groups of the Szeged State Archives). Budapest 1966. - A Szentesi Állami Levéltár fondjainak jegyzéke (List of Archival Groups of the Szentes State Archives). Budapest 1966. Ferenc OLTVAI:^4 Magyar Tanácsköztársaság dokumentumai Szegeden. Bibliográfia. (Documents on the Hungarian Councils' Republic at Szeged. A Bibliography.) Szeged, 1973. The research rooms of the Csongrád County Archives are open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., till noon on Saturdays. Researchers may use the books of the reference library, connected with their subjects. There are two archival reference libraries, at Szeged and Szentes, their holdings total 12,300 volumes altogether, plus 50 historical journals. Both preserve books very valuable for the history of the county. Dr. József FARKAS
