A Veszprémi Székeskáptalan Levéltára (Archives of the Veszprém Cathedral Chapter)

fire in the castle. It has luckily survived the Turkish times, since at the rumour of the Turks approaching on the 21th September 1544 the records were removed to Sopron. In 1630, at the reestablishment of the chapter the archives returned to Veszprém and were permanently located again in the premises over the sacristy of the cathedral. In 1972, owing to a considerable material sacrifice of the bishopric and the chapter the archives found an entirely satisfactory home in two premises of the former Franciscan convent. The archives are maintained by the cathedral chapter. The archival material totals 19 running metres. The most ancient record dates from 1079, this is the second oldest charter of undoubted authenticity in Hungary. There are 1614 charters prior to Mohács in the archives, 632 of which got to the archives of the chapter from the episcopal archives as a perpetual deposit. Journals of the chapter sittings are extant from the middle of the eighteenth century. In the series of the account books of the chapter the first volume from 1495 to 1552 has an outstanding value, as it contains the income of the chapter, its division and other economic measures. The second volume of accounts begins with 1730. The archives keep in separate groups according to subjects the records on the estates, on the jurisdiction of the chapter, on foundations and various conscriptions. The eighteenth and nineteenth century maps and plans are preserved in separate collections. The repository was surveyed by Pál Lukcsics in the Levéltári Közlemények (Archival Bulletin) vol. 1930, nos 34. Research is possible from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays. Research is helped by the respective finding aids (elenchi). Dr. Jozsef KORMENDY
