Diplomatarium comitum terrestrium Crisiensium (1274-1439) Only a relatively small amount of charters are available for the study of the castle district of Križevci, which remained in royal hands.48 Its centre should be located in Križevci castle, that is in the town of Križevci, where the majority of the charters were issued by the comites terrestres of Križevci.49 The comes terrestris, who was the head of the noble district, designated his own office by the Latin term terrestmtus.50 Their activity may be followed from the mid-thirteenth century until the 1440s.51 The office of the comes terrestris of Križevci and the individuals who held it We do not know how the process of choosing a comes terrestris to his duty exactly looked like. However, from the example of the castle district of Rovišće, we know that castle warriors elected him among themselves based on his capabilities.52 It is also probable that the elections of such officials could have taken place in the spring, as it is known for Rovišće, where the renewal of the castle districts' administration was happening on St. George's Day.53 Horvát-magyar kapcsolatok interdisciplináris konferencia [Croatian-Hungarian connections. An interdisciplinary conference], held in Pécs 11 November 2008. 48 In the fourteenth century there are 25 charters extant, which are connected to the comites terrestres, while for the fifteenth century there are 35 (B. Hálasz, A körösi comes terrestrisek tevékenysége a XV. században). For a survey of estates connected with the Križevci castle, see: Ćuk, Plemeniti Križevčani, pp. 52-66. 49 Summary of the content and regesta of the extant charters are not included. These charters do not include a place in their dating clause: 20 September 1356 (Documenta 9), 9 March 1367 (Documenta 12), 4 March 1372 (Documenta 15), 2 August 1430 (Documenta 58). In the charter following place is noted: Datum in Cherezteuh Zentpeter (present-day Sveti Petar Cvrstec, in Croatia, Southeast of Križevci) 5 September 1435 (Documenta 59). 50 Adam of Mindszent, 19 June 1416 (Documenta 42). 51 See the archontology of comites terrestres in the appendix. 52 In August of 1424, the prediales seu nobiles castrenses de districtu Rouyche came in front of Ban Denis Marcali of Slavonia and declared, amongst other things, that on St. George's Day they have elected among themselves comes terrestris Nicholas, son of Matthew of Lipa (unanimi voluntate Nicolaum filium Mathews in ipsorum comitem terrestrem elegerint). Later, instead of him in ipsorum comitem terrestrem elevassent et constituissent Elias, son of Mikec de iuxta Vellike (MNL OL, DL 11119). 53 Several references in the sources suggest this. In the charter of comes Peter Csirke and the noble magistrates of Križevci from 7 May 1370, in which are mentioned castle warriors of the Hegen kindred - John, son of Benedict, called Hero and Hegen, son of Mark had a dispute over an estate (CD 14, doc. 186). In the November of the same year, in the litigation, a castle warrior Andrew, son of Wlkina, was involved. In the 118
