The Vienna Hofherr-Schrantz Machine Works was founded in 1869. In Budapest it created in 1881 a sales branch and repair shop. In 1900 it started building a plant at Kispest, which was registered as private firm under the name of Hofherr-Schrantz. The Kispest plant became in 19o8 a joint stock company. In 1912 the Hofherr-Schrantz and Clayton and Shuttleworth companies merged both in Vienna and in Budapest. The merger in Hungary, a transaction in which the Niederbsterreichische Escompte Gesellschaft and the Zentraleuropaische Lander-bank had taken part created the Hofherr-SchrantzClayton-Shuttleworth Hungarian Machine Works Co.Ltd. In addition to the two big banks mentioned the Hungarian General Credit Bank figured in the nineteen-twenties already also among the big shareholders of the company and acquired at the time of the world crisis of 1929-1933 the majority of the shares. The Company was nationalized on April 7th, 1948.
