Andrew III Ducal equestrian seal before 1290 fragment: 70 x 55 mm Only a fragmentary impression of the front is known. Prince Andrew’s use of the barred coat of arms used by previous members of the House of Árpád, including his grandfather Andrew II, is clearly a deliberate attempt to distance himself from the representation of his contemporary rival, Ladislaus IV. This may be the princely equestrian seal referred to as sigillum simplex after Andrew Ill’s coronation. (The continued use of a ducal or junior king’s seal is also known of from the time of Stephen V.) In a charter issued near Zólyom (Zvolen) on 22 September 1290 to commemorate his coronation, the new king, with due heed to the special status of the Esztergom church, permitted the folk of the archbishop and the chapter who lived outside the Esztergom ramparts to bring their goods to the Esztergom market without paying duty, as had been their privilege since the foundation of the church ofEsztergom: ...presentes litteras sub simplicis sigilli nostri munimine dari eidem Ecclesie iussimus et fecimus communitas; quia de beneplacito concordi et voluntate parili prelatorum et baronum Regni nostri fuit sentencialiter terminatum, ut usque anni spácium, a tempore coronacionis nostre, nonnisi sub simplo sigilli nostri, indulta nostre serenitatis, quantumcumque perpetuo duratura, non debeant emanare. Post annum vero elapsum nostri serenitati reportate, duplicis, absque ulla pausa condicione, sigilli nostri munimine roborentur. (MonStrig II, p. 272; cf. RegArp II/4, n. 3668) The legend is missing from the fragment. Copies: Budapest History Museum, inv. no. 66.1910. Budapest, Hungarian National Archives, VI 42.
