asymmetric arrangement of the hands holding the insignia corresponds with his own gold seal and the seals of his successor, Stephen V. Unlike the gold seal, it does not include Lodomeria in the legend. The double-cross heraldic shield on the reverse is highly significant in the development of the Hungarian coat of arms. Together with the gold seal, it marks the moment when the Byzantine double cross symbol, which had appeared during the reign of Béla III, took its place on the royal coat of arms. It was also during Béla IV’s reign that various versions of the cross symbol became the heraldic devices on the reverse of coins, displacing the barred coat of arms common in Andrew II’s time. Béla IV (1235-1270) Second double seal 1241/42-1270 diam: 95 mm Replaced the first royal double seal which had lallen into Mongol hands at the Battle of Muhi, and possibly made immediately afterwards, in 1241. The second double seal differs from its predecessor chiefly in the figure and the two-line legend on the front. The figure of the king appears with both arms outstretched, as on Andrew IPs seals. The same form of representation appears on Queen Mary’s double seal. The coat of arms on the reverse is a repeat of that on the first double seal, with the addition of a pointed spike at the bottom of the stem, as used to fasten crosses. Legend in two rows on front, between beaded lines, words divided by triple points, outer circle: S(IGILLVM) BELE DEI GRACIA HVNGARIE DALMACIE CHOROVACIE RAME inner circle: SERVIE GALLIGHIE CVMANIE REGIS on reverse, divided from coat of arms by a double line and beaded line: SIGILLVM QVARTI BELE SECVNDI ANDREE REGIS FILII Originals: Esztergom, Cathedral Chapter Archives, 34-1-1,29-1-1,9-2-2, F 1.
