Acknowledgements I am very grateful to László Forró (Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest, Hungary), who kindly lent the material from the Daday Collection. Also many thanks to Danielle Defaye (National Museum of Natural History, Paris, France), Wen-Been Chang (National Museum of Marine Biology, Kaohshiung, Taiwan) and Sunny George (Christ College, Irinjalakuda, India), who sent specimens of M. granulatus, M. isabellae, M. thermocyclopoides , M. splendidus and M. ogunnus. I am indebted to my kind Vietnamese colleagues, Dr. Vu Sinh Nam, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Yen, Mrs. Nguyen Tu Bin, and Mr. Tran Vu Phong (National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Hanoi) who took the unpleasant task to test my key.
