Dendrogram of three populations of the conga hutia based on qualitative morphological characters Habitat Habitat characteristics of the southern form differ considerably from those of C. p. relictus. It typically lives in semideciduous forest on rocky karstic ground, with numerous "casimbas" (peculiar cavities in karstic rock) up to 1-2 meters deep (Mateo 1981). Hutias take refuge and build their nests in these "casimbas". Many adult individuals can be found in them. Although the conga hutia is a good climber, the terrestrial habits of the southern form are obvious, since it rarely takes to trees as a refuge. These habits are correlated with the fact that of all populations of hutias studied by us, this population has the highest mean weight. southern form 1 Capromys pilorides relictus ' Capromys pilorides pilorides I 1 I I I 0.020 0.015 0.010 0.005 0.000 NETS DISTANCE Fig. 3.
