pulations. However, the frequency of the U-shape is much higher in the southern form while in the northern subspecies relictus the V-shape predominates. The Vshape, however, is less distinct in the southern form, since the posterior edge of the postpalatal fossa in this form and in C. p. pilorides never reaches the level of the anterior alveole of M 3 , while in one out of five of C. p. relictus this point is reached, and in one out of six it is even surpassed. When this feature in analyzed in relation to the medial lingual fissure of M 3 , each of the two subspecies and the southern form show a peculiar distribution of the character among individuals.
