BOOK REVIEW Dr. Papp László és Dr. Szappanos Albert: Bagócslegyek - Gasterophilidae, Oestridae, Hypodermatidae (In Hungarian, with 29 black-and-white tables) Magyar Természettudományi Múzeum, Budapest, 1992 Bot flies and warble flies with their parasitic larvae are among the most important insect pests both for animal husbandry and game management. Larvae of several species are causative agents of human myiasis, therefore their significance for public health is not to be neglected. The corresponding part of the bot flies and warble flies in the Fauna Hungáriáé book series has not been published, so their positive identification was almost impossible for people in applied science in Hungary, and researchers had to search through numerous books and journal articles to correctly determine adults and larvae. With its compound morphological descriptions, identification keys and numerous illustrations this book serves the correct identification of not only the adult flies but also their larvae (larval stages). In addition, the most important bionomical, phenological and other data are also given, which promote a causal planning of therapeutic measures. Both the forms in printing and arrangement of illustrations follow the traditional forms of the series Fauna Hungáriáé in all possible cases but the book was published out of the series. The book is co-authored by László Papp, a dipterist-taxonomist and by Albert Szappanos, a country veterinarian from Bács-Kiskun megye, who made all the drawings. Most of the drawings are original and meet scientific and graphic standards higher than those represented by the drawings hitherto published anywhere on bot flies and warble flies. The manuscript was read by Professor Tibor Kassai (Chair of the Department of Parasitology, Veterinary Science University, Budapest) and by László Sugár, a well-known game parasitologist. The booklet of 56 printed and stapled pages with unique illustrations is bound in coloured plastic-covered paperback and printed on high-quality paper. This booklet was published by the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest in November 1992 and publications costs were partly defrayed by the Hungarian National Science Fund. Copies may be obtained from the Library of the Hungarian Natural History Museum only, at a price of 250 HUF.
