MISCELLANEA ZOOLOGICA HUNGARICA Tomus 7. 1992. p. 53-58 Eurytemora velox (Lilljeborg, 1853) (Copepoda, Calanoida) in the Szigetköz region of the Danube by L. Forró and P. Gulyás (Received May 20, 1992) Abstract: Eurytemora velox was found at six localities in the Szigetköz region of the Hungarian Danube in June and September 1991. The specimens are described briefly and some relevant locality data are given. Keywords: Eurytemora velox, Copepoda. Calanoida, Danube, Szigetköz Szigetköz is the westernmost part of the Hungarian Danube section, besides the main river it consists of several side branches, dead arms, irrigation channels and various small, standing waters. This area has been surveyed in order to get information about the aquatic biota, to obtain data about the species composition of the Zooplankton communities of the various water bodies. During these investigations both of the authors independently found specimens of Eurytemora velox in several samples. This species has not been recorded yet from Hungary. A brief description of our material is given, and our results are compared with previous findings from Europe. E. velox is the first member of Temoridae recorded from Hungary. In his paper Éber (1955) dealt with the planktonic microflora and -fauna of the rivers of the Carpathian Basin, including the Danube, however, a mere species list was given without exact locality and date. As a member of the Zooplankton of the Danube E. velox was listed (along with other calanoids such as Heterocope saliens, H. weissmanni, Eurytemora lacustris, none of which has been recorded as yet by other researchers from Hungary), but as he collected from the Danube outside Hungary, as well, these data cannot be considered reliable enough concerning the Hungarian fauna. None of the material was deposited in any public collection and nor did he keep a private collection (A. Urban, pers. comm.). Considering all these circumstances we think that the specimens we have collected should be regarded as first ones from Hungary and, hence E. velox is a new species to the Hungarian fauna. Eurytemora velox (Lilljeborg, 1853) Description Female: body slender, cephalosome about as long as the succeeding three segments combined (Fig. 1). Last metasome segment with great lateral expansions, outline S-shaped in dorsal view. Each expansion bears five delicate hairs on the outer margin (Fig. 2). Furcal ramus 4-5 times as long as broad, inner and dorsal surface covered with fine hairs. Penultimate segment of the 5th leg usually with one spine only. This is a species specific feature (see e. g. Sars 1903, Harding &
