MISCELLANEA Tomus 6. ZOOLOGICA 1991. HUNGARICA p. 77-85 Annotated list of type specimens of recent mammals in the Hungarian Natural History Museum by G. CSORBA and A. DEMETER (Received June 17,1991) Abstract A list of the type specimens stored in the Mammal Collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum with some remarks and newly designated lectotypes is given. Key words: type specimen, mammals, Hungarian Natural History Museum The Mammal Collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum (HNHM) houses over 30,000 specimens of recent mammals. DEMETER & TOPÁL (1987) reported some of the old specimens deposited here and commented on the arrangement and facilities of the collection. Over the past three years the Mammal Collection has been completely rearranged, and relocation and revision of the holdings, combined with ongoing computerization of the catalogues (DEMETER et al. 1989) necessitated a thorough check of all the type specimens. There are a number of published catalogues of type specimens preserved in various collections (see bibliographies in YATES et al. (1987) and SCHLITTER (1974)) which are extremely useful for locating type specimens for taxonomic studies. With this objective in mind, herein an annotated list of type specimens of mammals in the HNHM is presented with citations, locality and date of collection (if given), state of preservation, current taxonomic status and remarks, whenever necessary. The locality is given as in the description, only the words county and mts. have been translated to English, and the country is given in English in brackets, irrespective of the original description.
