Rexdale, Ont. 745-8904 thought the destiny of the individual Jew is bound up with the fate of the Jewish people. Not only is the security of one dependent on that of the other, but there is no morality for the Jew unless the Jewish nation is moral, no meaning in life for the individual Jew without meaning for the Jewish people, no spiritual quality for the individual unless the people is faithful to the essence of Jewish values. That is why on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, when we examine our lives as individuals, we cannot ignore the impact of the state of Israel upon our thinking and behaviour; for the Jewish state is part of the Jewish people. Conventional wisdom argues that Jews in Toronto, Montreal or New York have no moral right to intervene in problems that for Israelis are matters of life and death; the Israelis alone should decide what is best for them. And so leaders in the Diaspora have no alternative but to support official Israeli policies, whichever party might be at the helm, following the principle of “my country right or wrong.” But — and it's a big but — those who say “my country right or wrong” have a right, nay, a duty, to do everything possible to prevent their country from going wrong. If Israel goes wrong, even the unconditional support of the Diaspora will not save her. Furthermore, the collapse of Israel will be a disaster for the Diaspora, since the destinies of both are irrevocably linked. Neither has much chance to survive without the other. The state of Israel was created not by the Jewish community in Palestine alone, but by the Jewish people as a whole. Israel's problems her conflict with the Arab world — originated precisely because of her determination to be a state not only of and for the Jews who live in it but for all the Jews who might desire or be compelled to immigrate to it. In real sense, every Jew is a potential citizen of Israel, even non-Zionists, who might some day be forced to look to the Jewish state as a haven of refuge for themselves and their children. This relationship explains the unique ties binding Israel and the Diaspora and the deep commitment of one to the other. Since the Diaspora has such an irrevocable stake in Israel, Diaspora Jews cannot be indifferent toward Israel's economic system, social conditions, moral values and quality of life. The business of every Jew inside and outside Israel is to determine whether Israel will be a secular and democratic state embodying the principles of freedom, social justice, advanced welfare, creative culture, aspiring to social progress and peace, or one dominated by a coalition of militaristic chauvinism and obscurantist clericalism, where democracy is replaced by theocracy, freedom of conscience by the most orthodox and intolerant elements of Jewish religion, progressive and creative nationalism by narrow-minded intrasigence, and search for peace and co-existence with Arab neighbors by a pathological complex to relive and re-enact to Book of Joshua. So, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur do not call on us to say “my country right or wrong” but “my country, if right, and if wrong, to be set right.” That is the direction in which Teshuvah and Tefillah point in the year 5738. M2N 5R7 YORK ACADEMY was established so that students with superior academic talents can be challenged in a manner which is seldom accomplished in the regular school system. Our students are provided with the opportunity to explore in depth the subjects of the Ontario curriculum. They will accomplish this under the guidance of our stqff of qualified teachers who are specialists in their field. < Our small classes- allow the teachers to work with individuals so that each student is able to receive the teacher's assistance and approbation. This recognition is the encouragement that we all need in order to strive for the next higher level of learning. Toronto has many institutions such as the Museum, O'Keefe Centre, Science Centre, Black Creek Pioneer Village, which are used to stimulate the curiosity and imaginations of our students. These imaginations will be called upon each year to produce several compositions, reports, and essays in the various subjects of the curriculum. York Academy students are expected to do homework. Each successive year will produce greater homework demands. This is done in order to prepare our students for the demands of a university education. Our teachers will treat their students with the kindness and politeness that each individual deserves. In return, they will expect cooperation, diligence and respect from their students. This exchange will lay the foundations for an educational environment that will be both exciting and gratifying to the student. In order for our graduates to qualify for the Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diplomas, our teachers and our curriculum are inspected yearly by the Ministry of Education.
