Ausztrália munkáspárti miniszterelnöke ünnepé­lyes ígéretet tett: örök időkre véget vet hazájában a faji türelmetlenség sötét korszakának. „A bennszülöttek — han­goztatta a munkáspárt 1972-es választási mani­­fesztuma — olyan felelős­séget jelentenek számunk­ra, amely elől nem térhe­tünk ki, nem osztozhatunk rajta senkivel, s nem hagy­hatjuk figyelmen kívül.” ragatlan fajankó”, Cava­­naghről viszont a. nyilvá­nosság előtt azt mondotta, hogy „túlságosan a fehér reakció hatása alá került”. Pattersont elintézte azzal, hogy „fa­ügyek egyik szakértője — s ő nem is tanúsított sem­miféle megértést irántuk.” Pedig Whitlam kormány­zata máris komoly lépése­ket tett. Tavaly majd­nem 75 millió dollárt köl­tött a bennszülöttek hely­zetének javítására. Kibő­vítette a társadalombizto­sítási juttatásokban része­sülők körét, és a múlt év novemberében választáso­kat szervezett országos konzultatív bennszülött bi­zottság létesítése végett. Mindezzel azonban a munkáspárti kormány ki­váltotta a fehérek ellenke­zését. s ezzel szemben nem is próbál teljes eréllyel föllépni. Mindkét oldalon szembetűnően nőttek a fa­ji feszültségek. Amikor például Brewarrina várost a közelmúltban árvíz fe­nyegette, bennszülöttek el­keseredett csoportja nem volt hajlandó segíteni a fehér közösség szempontjá­ból fontos töltések megerő­sítésében, mert megtagad­ták tőlük élelmiszer-után­pótlás eljuttatását a kör­nyező vidékeken levő el­szigetelt bennszülött tele­pülésekre. Sok bennszülött mégis elismeri, hogy a munkás­párt bizonyos elismerést érdemel faji politikájáért. „Jobban bánik velünk, mint amilyen bánásmódot másoktól kaphatnánk” —■ mondja Chicka Dixon bennszülött aktivista.
