Ensuring an optimal climate is the continuing duty of conservators, the “guardians” of cultural artifacts. The Spaces of Natural Science Department takes numerous steps to ensure an advantageous climate for their mammal collections, these procedures include: • Disinfecting the appropriate museum spaces 4 times annually. • Preventing vulnerable collection decline by using different insecticides when necessary. — Temporary exhibitions — Displayed pieces — Stored items. • Cleaning yearly pieces displayed in the main exhibit. • Sanitizing the pieces in the main exhibit every time it is improved by changing items. • Controlling the humidity at the optimal level using dehumidification equipment. As with any museum and exhibit, the flow of visitors is a desirable thing. We want people to enjoy and appreciate the Museum’s collections, but introducing people into the display areas has a few added risks for keeping a safe microclimate. These risks can include introducing additional unwanted pests and disturbing the already fragile microclimate. Because of these risks the Spaces of Natural Science Department must have constant vigilance with an eye towards conservation. By being vigilant, the conservators guarantee the best possible environment for the healthy, vibrant biological collection.
