THE ANALYSIS OF THE CERAMIC MATERIAL FROM GLODENI. PRELIMINARY CONSIDERATIONS KOPPÁNY BULCSÚ ÖTVÖS Mures County Museum, Tärgu Mures, RO KATALIN SI DÓ PhD, University of Pécs, HU During field work in 2011, a Roman site in Glodeni (Marossárpatak), which was mentioned in the archaeological repertoire of county Mures, was successfully indentified. From this site a great number of pottery fragments were collected and based on the material, the presence of pottery kilns can be hypothesized. The aim of this study is to tackle this hypothesis more profoundly together with the analysis of the collected pottery that can maybe indicate the dating of the site itself, as well as to supply further information on the quality and types of the locally produced pottery vessels. Keywords: Roman, pottery, slip, firing, settlement Glodeni (Hungarian: Marossárpatak) is situated 14 km from Tärgu Mures and lays on the right side of the River Mures towards northeast. The site can be found 2 km north from the settlement, on the right side of the Lu( stream, on the first terrace of the Lu( and Mures. It occupies an ideal place for a settlement; it was used already in the Middle Bronze Age (Lazär 1995, 136) as the pottery from the Wietenberg culture found on the site indicates. Besides the large amount of varied pottery, bricks and tiles that allude to the existence of a settlement, a large concentration of river stones were observed, which cannot be found in the area between the site and the Mures River, excluding the fact that the stone ended up on the site in a natural way. In a range of 25 km of the site from Glodeni two auxiliary camps can be found, towards east Cälugäreni (Protase 1965,209-214) and to the north Bráncovenesti (Protase-Zrínyi 1994,75-152) as well as an important pottery production center at Cristesti (Man 2011) to the south (Pi. 1/1). The site does not appear in antique sources, and it was mentioned for the first time by Lazar (1993, 81) referring to the fourth page of Gheorghe Trohani’s manuscript entitled “Cercetäri, Raport de cercetare, vara 1988”, which unfortunately was never published. Later, Lazär mentions it again in the archaeological repertoire of Mures County (Lazär 1995,136). Until now, these two works dealt with the site from Glodeni, it was researched only through field work, and thorough archaeological investigation was not pursued. The site is bordered on its eastern side by the road connecting Glodeni to Voivodeni and on its southern side by the road connecting the settlement to Päingeni.
