The paleontological collection “Ion Stänoiu”from the patrimony of the Museum of Oltenia- trilobites: Conocoryphes sulzerv,- corals: Thecosmilia trichotoma, Calamopora spongites, Autopora serpens;- brachiopods: Terebratula reticularis, T. fumanensis, Pectunculus obovatus, Rhynconella sp. etc.;- echinoids: Pentacrinus cingulatus, Schizaster ambulacrarum, Laganum transilvanicum, Euspatangus hainaldi, Echinolampas gigas etc.;- worms: Serpula spirulea, S. dilatata-,- gastropods: Actaeonella sp., Bellerophon sp., Actaeonella sp., Phasionella scalaroides, Rostellaria gigantea, Cerithium margaritaceum, Turitella fuscata, Conusfuscocingulatus, C. vindobonensis, Trochus patulus, Mitra cupresina etc.;- bivalves: Pectunculus obovatus, Diceras arietinum, Gryphaea ornata, Isocardia striata, Pecten solen, Spondyllus bifrons, Cardium granulosum, C. gigas, Arca diluvii, Venus multilamella, Lucina dujardini, Ostrea flabellula, О. gigantea etc.- scaphopods: Dentalium michelotti-,- ammonites: Ammonites triplicatus, Ammonites sp.;- belemnites: Belemnites sp.- vertebrates 9 species.- fish: Girodus sp., Placodus sp., Carcharodongracilis, Meletta sardinites, Meletta sp., Clupea crenata,- mammals: Halitherium sp. In a synthetic graphic presentation, the systemic repartition of the samples in the “Ion Stänoiu“ collection looks like in fig. 1. The sample repartition according to paleontological ages is also extremely varied, from Palaeozoic to late Pliocene: Conocoryphes sulzeri — Cambrian, Orthoceras sp. - Ordovician, Bohemograptus bohemicus — Silurian, Neuropteris sp. - Carboniferous, Encrinus liliiformis — Triassic, Diceras arietinum -Jurassic, Hyppurites sp. - Cretaceous, Nummulites perforatus -Eocene, Carcharodon gracilis - Oligocene, Pyrulla condita - Miocene, Meletta sardinites — Pliocene etc. Fig. 1: The systemic structure of the “Ion Stänoiu” collection: 1 - plants; 2 - invertebrates; 3 - vertebrates. One of the functions fulfilled by the museum as an institution is the valuation of samples by display. The items in the collection under discussion have been plentifully used for paleontological exhibitions and also for illustrating some activities typical for museums: conferences, presentations, meetings with the public etc. The great systemic variety had as a consequence that many samples of this collection were used along the time in setting up most of the paleontological exhibitions of the Natural Sciences Section (currently the Natural Sciences office) of the Museum of Oltenia. Between 1988 and 2004, this collection has known its true “glory”, many of its component elements having been selected 159
