Gál Szilárd Sándor: Anthropological Study of the Medieval Cemetery from Adămuş Morfo-taxonomical Measurements of the Osteological Material

ANTHROPOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE MEDIEVAL CEMETERY FROM ADÄMU§. MORFO-TAXONOMICAL MEASUREMENTS OF THE OSTEOLOGICAL MATERIAL GÁL Szilárd Sándor Institute of Archaeology and Art History, Cluj-Napoca Method and material During the morfo-taxonomical analysis I followed different methods for Infans and Juvenis skeletons. For children I applied dental analysis (eruption phase of teeth), the dimension of long bones, etc. (after Lovejoy, Ubelaker, Stloukal-Hanáková). In Juvenis cases I applied dental analysis, the ossification phase (synostosis) of the epiphysis ends and the dimension of long bones (after Pearson, Nemeskéri, Harsányi, Acsádi). For Adult skeletons I applied the analysis of ecto- and endocranial sutures, the degradation of teeth, the proximal and distal epiphysis of long bones (after Martin-Saller, Nemeskéri, Sjovold). The morphological and metric data were taken after Martin’s method. The skull measurements and indices were arranged in categories according to Aleksejev-Debets’s classification. The anthropological representation of the cemetery is relatively good. In this publication I examined 10 graves, discovered by the archaeologists from the Mure§ County Museum. Because of the soil characteristics I could not make comprehensive measurements on the skull. I applied taxonomical measurements for long bones (fragmentary skeletal bones) and dental analysis. During the analysis I identified 2 Adultus, 2 Iuvenis, 4 Infans I, and 2 Infans II skeletons. Description of the material Ml. 25-30 years old Adult The skeleton was preserved fragmentary. Skull. Cranium: -. Thorax: 15 fragments from the diaphysis of ribs and 1 fragment from the stern (corpus sterni). Sex determination: it is not possible with classical methods. Age determination: the dimension and the surface of the ribs show adult characteristics. М2. 14-16years old Juvenis Female I was able to make a detailed analysis. The skeleton was preserved relatively well. Skull. Cranium: parietal bone, occipital bone, temporal bone, frontal bone, the degree of the glabella is 3, the protuberantia externa is 4. Bones of the face: fragments from the maxilla and MARISIA XXIX, p. 211-216
